In short
The words sound alike, but the experiences are different. In one you do, in the other you receive. Here we untangle the terms, so that you know what you are saying yes to.
What does kundalini mean?
Kundalini is Sanskrit and is usually translated as coiled. In the yoga tradition the word describes a dormant life energy at the base of the spine, often depicted as a serpent. It is a spiritual image of the life force – not a medical concept.
Kundalini yoga – you do
Kundalini yoga is an active practice with set series of movements, breathing exercises, mantras and meditation. The form that is common in the West spread during the 20th century. You follow a teacher and do the exercises yourself.
Kundalini activation – you receive
In a kundalini activation there is no technique to learn. You are guided through music into a state of presence and allow whatever wants to happen to happen. The experience is different for everyone: some feel stillness, others movement, warmth or strong emotions.
With us, this session is called Sacred Feminine Kundalini Activation and is part of the day retreat and the weekend retreat. We hold it in a safe space, with loving intention, and you always take part on your own terms.
What is good to know?
There are no controlled studies of this kind of session, so what is said about effects is based on participants' own accounts. Organisers usually ask anyone who has epilepsy, a heart condition, a psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder, or who is pregnant, to consult their doctor first. Do feel free to tell us in advance, and we will talk about what suits you. This does not replace healthcare.
